Global insurer American International Group, Inc. (AIG) has appointed Christopher Schaper as its new Chief Risk Officer on a permanent basis, effective immediately.
He has held the same role on an interim basis since September 2024, while also serving as AIG’s Global Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO). In an interim capacity, Schaper will continue to serve as Global CUO until a successor is appointed, AIG noted.
Schaper will continue to report to Peter Zaffino, AIG Chairman & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) as he continues to serve on AIG’s Executive Leadership Team.
As Chief Risk Officer, Schaper’s remit includes oversight of the company’s global Enterprise Risk Management organization, risk management strategy, policies and practices.
Schaper became AIG’s Global CUO in 2023. Previously, he was CEO of AIG Re as well as CEO of both Validus Re and AlphaCat.
He joined AIG in 2019 from Marsh McLennan and has served in senior leadership roles at Montpelier Re Ltd., Endurance Specialty Insurance Ltd., and GE Capital.
Zaffino commented on the appointment, “I have known Chris for over 25 years, and his deep understanding of our industry and expertise in risk management have helped shape our culture of underwriting excellence.
“I am confident that under Chris’ leadership, our risk organization will further enhance our enterprise risk framework to address the evolving global risk landscape.”
