AXIS Capital Holdings Limited, a provider of specialty insurance and reinsurance solutions, has announced new leadership appointments for its Irish legal entities, AXIS Re SE and AXIS Specialty Europe SE, both based in Ireland and regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.
Offering a wide range of products to help businesses manage complex risks, including property, casualty, and professional lines, AXIS Capital is recognised for its expertise in underwriting and risk management. The new appointments take effect from October 7, 2024.
Dax Gulmohamed has been named CEO of AXIS Specialty Europe SE (ASE), where he will oversee the entity and its branches in Belgium and the UK.
As part of his new role, he will relocate from London to Dublin. He has been with AXIS since 2016, previously serving as ASE’s Chief Underwriting Officer and as the UK Branch Manager for more than six years.
Gulmohamed succeeds Fintan Mullarkey, who is stepping down after a remarkable 21-year career with AXIS. Mullarkey was instrumental in creating and expanding the European Legal Entity platform, serving as CEO since 2022.
Prior to that, he was CFO of the European business, overseeing its growth into a leading operation with combined revenues surpassing $3 billion.
He also held the position of Director at AXIS Managing Agency, contributing to the establishment of the Company’s Lloyd’s operations in 2014.
AXIS Chief Financial Officer Pete Vogt commented: “Fintan has been a highly valued and trusted member of our European Leadership group for over two decades; his diligence, technical expertise and business acumen have been key to the successful growth of our European Specialty Insurance Business. We wish him every success in his future endeavours.”
He continued: “A trusted and respected leader within AXIS for more than 20 years, Dax brings expansive specialty underwriting knowledge and acumen, as well as a deep understanding of the London market. We welcome him to this role.”
John O’Neill has been appointed CEO of AXIS Re SE (ARe), where he will oversee the Ireland-based entity and its Zurich branch.
O’Neill, who joined AXIS in 2016, currently serves as Senior Vice President of Life Reinsurance, a role he will continue to hold alongside his new position as CEO of ARe. He is a qualified actuary and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland.
Mark McCormick, the outgoing CEO of ARe, will be leaving AXIS after 14 years with the company, including four years as CEO of ARe and director of ASE.
During his tenure, McCormick also served as Head of Underwriting Execution for AXIS’s global reinsurance business, leading strategic initiatives for the company’s $2 billion operation across multiple lines and regions.
AXIS Re CEO Ann Haugh added: “Mark was instrumental in supporting the successful execution of our repositioning as a specialist reinsurer and driving margin expansion. We wish him every success in the future.”
Haugh continued: “In John, we have a worthy successor who brings extensive reinsurance expertise garnered over a nearly three-decade career. We look forward to serving with John in this new role.”
